What You Will Need

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup chopped yellow onion or 1 tbsp dried onion flakes
  • 1 small to medium-sized green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 small stock of celery, chopped
  • 4 oz white mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 clove, garlic, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 can diced tomatoes with the liquid
  • 1 cup chicken stock or 1 cup of broth made with 1 tsp of Better than Bullion paste and 1 cup of water.
  • 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/8 tsp celery seed, ground
  • tbsp olive oil for sauteing

The Process

Prepare the Ground Turkey Patties according to the recipe for "Faux Ground Beef."

  • Form into four equal-sized patties (about 1/2 inch thick). You can use a dull butter knife to make criss-cross marks on each patty to resemble traditional Swiss Steak. Cover and refrigerate while preparing the sauce.

Make the Sauce:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
    • Add chopped onion, celery, and bell pepper. Cook and stir until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add minced garlic and sliced mushrooms. Cook and stir until mushrooms are tender and release their liquid, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Stir in diced tomatoes (with their juices), tomato paste, broth, thyme, oregano, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.

Cook the Turkey Patties:

        • Lightly oil a large skillet. Add the turkey patties to the skillet and cook over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side or until cooked through. Important: Since turkey cooks faster than beef, ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Combine and Serve:

        • Pour the simmering sauce over the cooked turkey patties in the skillet. Heat gently until the sauce is bubbly and the patties are warmed through.
        • Serve immediately with a generous portion of mashed potatoes.

Tips & Variations:

        • Serve with a side of steamed green beans or a simple salad for a complete meal.
        • You can use different types of mushrooms, such as cremini or shiitake, for added flavor.

Enjoy your delicious and healthy "Faux Swiss Steak"!
